My Project

Getting "Ninth Ward" for my 6th-grade students will provide them with a thought-provoking story that explores powerful themes of resilience, hope, and community, all set against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina. This novel will give students a unique opportunity to connect with a relatable protagonist, Lisette, whose courage in the face of adversity will inspire them to reflect on their own experiences and challenges. Reading this book will not only engage them in a captivating narrative but also introduce important social issues such as natural disasters, race, and poverty in a way that is age-appropriate and relevant to their lives. This will help broaden their perspectives and encourage them to think critically about the world around them.

In the classroom, The Ninth Ward will serve as an excellent tool for developing essential reading and comprehension skills.

Students will dive into the story’s themes, characters, and symbolism, allowing them to engage in rich discussions and strengthen their ability to analyze text. The book also provides opportunities for cross-curricular learning, from history lessons about Hurricane Katrina to discussions on environmental science and social studies. These interdisciplinary connections will make the learning experience more dynamic and engaging, fostering both intellectual and emotional growth among the students.

The goal of this project is to provide each student with a personal copy of "Ninth Ward", ensuring that every child has the opportunity to read and engage with this impactful novel. By incorporating this book into our classroom, I aim to promote literacy, empathy, and critical thinking skills. Additionally, the project aims to create a more inclusive learning environment by exposing students to diverse voices and stories.
