Help Mr. Fox

I like to bring the human experience into my history lessons. One way I have done this as a 7th grade social studies teacher is by incorporating novels into my lessons. The text book used in 7th grade is void of anything in depth. Ancient Egypt is covered in a 6 page chapter. The French, Scientific and Industrial Revolutions are glossed over in one 4-page summary. World War I and World War II are combined in the same 5 page embarrassment. It is necessary for me to supplement my entire curriculum so my students can even have a chance of learning something. One way that I would like to supplement the curriculum is by teaching through novels. Last year I taught about the Russian Revolution through Orwell's Animal Farm and taught American History through donated biographies. I would like to do a lot more of this. Reading historical novels and non-fiction forces my students to read more difficult work. More importantly it allows them to think about the human element behind some of history's great problems. It brings events that happened 50 or 100 years ago to life in a way that a page in a text book could never do. I would like for my students to read Night, by Elie Wiesel , this year to learn about the struggles of the Holocaust. A book as powerful as Night is sure to give my students a real vision of what life was like in the concentration camps during WWII. I would like my students to realize that countless people who died in battles and in camps were individual people, not numbers. Night is a very challenging book that many of my students may find difficult to get through on their own. This is why I am asking for supplemental materials like the audio cd's and multiple head phone cd players. These will give struggling readers a chance to follow along as a narrator reads. I already have acquired an alternative text, Maus II, which is a graphic novel which tells a similar story to Night for English Language learners in my classroom. The alternative text and the audio cd's will provide much needed support so all students can reach a similar goal of truly understanding the human impact of the Holocaust. Please, help give my students a chance to actually see why we even study social studies. Let them understand that history is more than just places and dates. Help them recognize the human emotions and real life problems that helped shape the way the world has changed. Allow my students to challenge their thinking and reading skills by helping support this project.
