My Students

My first graders ADORE reading non fiction books! I think Walt Disney said it best when he said, "Our greatest natural resource is the minds of our children". When they read, especially non fiction books, it opens up vast worlds for them that they may only ever visit in their minds!

My students are first graders whose ages range from 6 to 7 years old.

They are very creative and LOVE to read! This group especially loves to read non fiction books, and we are working hard to add to our classroom library. They love that non fiction books teach them facts about topics such as history, science, and especially animals. We are a small "neighborhood" school with one section of each grade, Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. We are fortunate to live close to the beach, which enables us to see and appreciate many different types of animals; therefore, it also helps to spark our interest in other animals in other parts of the country and world!

My Project

My students are SO excited about the possibility of our being able to add to our classroom library of non fiction books. Our school district participates in the Accelerated Reader Program, and my first graders love that they can see their progress in learning to read and understand what they read, actually on a daily basis. I have carefully chosen books (About Amphibians: A Guide for Children, Meet the Panda and 100 Days Of School) that have quizzes in the AR program so that they can continue to see their progress each time they take a quiz on the books they have read. Since non fiction books play an integral part in helping to prepare them for the high stakes testing they will need to master in order to succeed in our ever-changing world, we are working hard to add these types of books to our classroom!

Donations to this project will be such a blessing to my students in so many ways!

The donated books will continue to help me foster their joy of learning every day. Again, these books will help me ensure that they are fully prepared not only to do well on their high stakes tests in their future school years, but also help ensure that they will have the skills needed to think creatively and logically to compete in the work world when they have graduated high school - and eventually college!
