My Students

Within a typical class, I will have highly gifted students, students with special needs, and also English learners. Over 75% of the students at the school qualify for free or reduced lunches, and for many of these students, their only access to technology (computer desktops/laptops) is at the school site. With more state and national testing, as well as core textbooks, becoming digitized there is an ever-increasing gap between technological fluency in my classroom. When my students have prolonged access to technology their presentation skills flourish as well as their ability to research and dive deeper into unit themes.

My Project

With media presentations my students will go the extra mile and put in more effort than in the standard stand in front of the class learning demonstration. Project based learning utilizing media such as video or audio podcasts allow my students to frame their learning in a way that is not only engaging to their peers, but also provides them with an opportunity to frame their content in the popular mediums of today. My students have posted Romeo & Juliet modern interpretations on YouTube as well as created audio dramatizations of their narrative short stories.

In exhibiting projects both in class and online they have produced models that have aided other students in understanding complex texts as well as shared their learning with a broader audience that includes peers, parents, teachers and others in our community.

Unfortunately many of my students do not have access to quality equipment and must rely on the watermarked freebies and minimal toolkit editing software that the app store provides. This has led to glitchy presentations that fluctuate in quality or are marred by promotional branding. When given access to facilities such as those at our local Boys & Girls club, my students are able to fully flex their creative muscles while creating polished final projects that are student festival worthy.

Having quality editing software and a quality audio microphone on our classroom desktop will help my students take their projects to the next level while honing 21st century skills that will help them to thrive in today's world.
