Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an inner city school where 100% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The students in my school range in age from three to fourteen and all come from diverse backgrounds. They learn, on a daily basis, in two languages, English and Spanish.

As a new educator in the building, I am trying to help change students' mindsets around physical education.

Many students are often not as active outside of school and physical education class is the time that I have to change that for them.

My Project

This project will provide students the gym experiences of a lot of the ideas that I wanted to bring to my class, but did not have the materials for.

I am excited for the opportunity to have students explore movement in new ways.

Hula Huts is an excellent throwing game that incorporates both teamwork and the idea of different players having different roles or jobs in a given game. I saw video of this game on the internet and made plans to play it, but when I returned to our equipment closet I discovered that we do not have enough dodge balls or hula hoops. Many of the hula hoops I do have are bent or too large to use for the game.

The days we used the parachute in PE were some of the most exciting days when I was a kindergarten student. This is an experience that emphasizes working together to achieve a common goal and I would love for my children to have this experience. This is why the parachute was included in my equipment list.

Team building with some of my upper grade students went really well last year, so well that I wanted to add a twist to their challenge. This project will complement the equipment I do have and really expand my possibilities for additional games with the footballs, kickballs, and exercise balls.
