My Students

My middle schoolers are really a special bunch. I started at my school as a 6th grader teacher, for 6 years, but when I met my current class, I knew I wanted to stay with them as long as possible. Therefore, I looped with them (moved up to teach the following grade when the class moved up) for two years now. Yep, that means I've taught this group of kids for 2, going on 3, years.

My middle schoolers are fiercely passionate about the world and love to share their opinions and investigate the world.

They have done so much work growing as readers and writers over the last two years- studying social issue book clubs, writing fiction that explored real-world issues like bullying and depression, becoming experts on topics like GMOs and gun control and planning and presenting Ted-Talk style presentations!

This year, I want to continue to challenge and engage them with a new module that matches their passion for learning, exploring the world and creating content that shares their unique perspectives on the world.

My Project

Students will use the materials to study mentor documentaries and podcasts about real-world issues and to create their own documentaries and podcasts. By giving access to the materials they might not have at home, all students will be able to create stunning projects, evening the playing field and helping give students practice in important real-world skills.

This project will help my middle schoolers use their passion, compassion, and critical thinking skills to create cutting-edge documentaries and podcasts about the issues that inspire them.

This class will help prepare students for 21-century technology skills and give them a voice in a world that often overlooks their voices and ideas because of their age.

Students will be able to work alone or in small groups, signing out video cameras, microphones, or other materials to bring to life their vision! Students might interview members of the community, search for the "just-right" setting to create a mood, or record the sights and sounds of a significant setting.
