Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school district does not have funding for enrichment. I created the newspaper club in an attempt to provide enrichment to our students. However, we do not have the means to produce such projects because we have limited use of our copiers and printers within our building. Therefore, I pay for it.

We are a title II district, with limited funding.

Our school houses about 500 second and third graders in a very diverse setting. Most of our students do not have the liberty to attend extra curricular activities. Our district does not have funding to provide additional help for these students. The newspaper club gives these students the opportunity to write freely and share events that happen at school. With about 25 students in the club, we are able to reach the advanced children, shy children and creative children as well as the children who need additional support with writing. The students do research, interviews, forecasting and reporting events. This club provides them with skill and confidence.

My Project

With a color printer and copier, the students will be able to produce their writing and share it with the rest of the school. They will be given the opportunity to learn the full functionality of a newspaper print shop. The students will take with them the knowledge of running a business, reporting, researching and producing a newspaper. In addition, they will learn to write creatively and express their thoughts in detail.

Our students do not have many opportunities to express themselves and feel important.

This club gives them the confidence and security they need to succeed as writers. They deserve the opportunity to soar just like the students in surrounding districts. They will become shining stars through their writing.
