My Students

My students are immigrant children from impoverished homes. They are all special education students with IEPs that struggle with school work. Their parents struggle to make ends meet and do not have access to news in English. They often watch Spanish tv shows.

My students would greatly benefit from the non-fiction articles and interesting news tidbits that are presented in Scholastic News Magazine.

It would expose their families to current events in the English language, as well. By reading Scholastic News articles, the students are also preparing for the New York State ELA Exam since the questions and activities that accompany the magazine are all aligned with the new Common Core Standards.

My Project

My students are reluctant readers who struggle to keep up with their school work. The Scholastic News Magazine has proven time and time again to capture their interest and engage them in current events. The articles help them to become better readers and learn about the world in a most interesting way. The students have access to videos that support the topics addressed.

All students should have access to the events going on in the world around them in order to become better citizens.

When students learn about what is going on, they can make better choices for the future. We also need a laminating machine and laminating supplies.
