Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class is comprised of a wide range of students: visual learners, auditory learners, active learners, low level readers, high level readers, and Spanish and English speaking learners.
They are energetic, have a passion for reading, and love lots of encouragement.
Our school is located in a poor neighborhood, and about 50% of the students' parents are struggling to make ends meet at home. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. However, this does not prevent them from coming to school, eager to embark on their learning journey. No matter how they learn or where they are in their learning journey, they hunger for information.
My Project
How do you find out about the latest news around the world? As adults, we are able to read and comprehend a newspaper and news reports on television, which is tailored to an adult audience. But what about kids? Don't they have a right to know what's going on in the world in a language that they can comprehend?
These valuable magazine resources will support student comprehension of current events in student-friendly language.
Students will see their learning skills through the lens of real-world situations, therefore making it more of a personal learning experience. They will have more sources to refer to when creating argumentative essays. They will be able to compare information amongst a variety of articles to weigh the value of each in specific content areas.
If our students are unable to travel around the world and meet important people or visit important landmarks in our history, then we have an obligation to bring it to them. Through the use of Time for Kids and Scholastic Magazines, I hope to engage my students in knowledge about people, cultures, and places around the world, as well as keep them up to date on current events that affect us all.
