Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and are a mixture of Hispanic and African American students. They are also students who have special needs. Furthermore, they do not have the economic means to purchase needed materials for the school year.

Although the parents and the school community do their best to provide for the children, most of my students begin the school year with one notebook that is to be used for all their subjects.

They also have a lack of interest for reading. Many of their parents are not high school graduates and work two jobs to provide for their families. As a result, many of my students who seek help academically only receive that help at school.

My Project

Students will benefit from reading Scholastic News magazine because it will help them to have a better understanding of our election process, political parties and other important current events. The current events information can help them develop informed opinions and contribute to class discussions. It will force students to pick a side. This will increase their interest in current events. Furthermore, Scholastic News will contribute to their development as effective readers ,develop and improve their vocabulary, word recognition skills, and comprehension.

Every two weeks I will assign an article to my students.

They will learn how to do a close read of the article with annotations. Then, each day of the week, I will post a different question about the article for a bell-ringer activity. Students will then turn in their annotated article and daily responses at the end of two weeks. They will then use their notes to write argumentative writing. I will create questions that force the students to pick a side and support their position with facts from the text. Students will become empowered with confidence that will encourage meaningful conversation.
