My Students

This is my 16th year as an educator. I started my career as a special education classroom teacher and have been working as school social worker for the past 10. As a trained mental health professional I assist with mental health concerns, behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, academic and classroom support, consultation with teachers, parents and administrators as well as provide individual and group counseling/therapy.

My school is a high poverty school in New York City.

All of our students receive free lunch. Ninety-seven percent of our student population is Black or Latino; many are first generation Americans. Our students are faced with many challenges inside and outside the classroom. They struggle personally and academically. Thirty percent of our students receive Special Education services. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are happy and motivated to learn.

Working with the children and families has truly been a highlight of my career.

My Project

A few months ago, I began a personal mindfulness and yoga practice which allowed me a glimpse of the joyful and free person I could be. This joy was a result of my increased ability to be present and respond to my environment, which included my students, parents and co-workers. My sessions became more calm and productive as I learned to really be present for my students. Since then, I’ve tried to facilitate a mindfulness practice for my students, but I would love the opportunity to be trained in how to do this more effectively.

I have been accepted to attend teacher training via Breathe For Change.

The Breathe For Change values give educators a framework to lead with love in their lives, relationships and communities.

Breathe For Change training draws upon the growing body of research linking mind-body wellness practices such as mindfulness and yoga to stress reduction, enhanced executive function, and increased emotional regulation. Executive function, which encompasses working memory and higher order thinking tasks, can be disrupted due to emotional dysregulation. Mindfulness promotes our ability to regulate emotion, which is key to coming back into control when strong emotions arise. In situations where children are stressed or experiencing anxiety, learning is difficult, if not impossible.

Participation in this training will allow me the opportunity to earn the RYT 200 certification so I can safely support the social emotional needs of students who might not otherwise have access to mindfulness and yoga. After seeing how much my personal practice changed my personal and professional life, I can only imagine the transformation that would occur if my students had a regular mindfulness and yoga practice as well.
