My Students

I teach visual arts, k-2 in a specials need school for students with Autism spectrum Disorders. My classroom revolves around differentiation and structure to try to meet the needs of over 40 students and help develop their social and communication skills through the arts.

Our students have varying special needs, as a result learning in every classroom throughout the school day must be a multi-sensory experience with structure.

I would like to enrich the art room with tools and materials for students to continue exploring in such a way, while learning to use these tools properly and preserving our art space.

My Project

My students need more art and sensory materials such as markers, crayons, beanbags, rubber stamps and scissors. Art materials can run out very quickly when teaching a population that needs to use materials in interesting ways. For example, while some students simply enjoy stripping crayons before making faint gestural lines, other students enjoy to color with great intensity and emotion. At the end of the year now, different learning styles and explorations have worn out some materials and we need to replenish our resources for continued creative projects.

Donations to this project will make a difference in the lives of students with ASD who are still just beginning to explore the arts.

These materials will help to ensure that we have the resources to foster continued learning and growth in the art room.
