Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Are you a reader? You know all the fabulous places a book can take you. You know how a good book can spark ideas and inspire hope. You know how a good book can transport you out of a bad environment. Books open the windows to the world.

My students are hard-working and amazing.

They speak a variety of different languages and come from homes where there is often not enough money for food, let alone books. Most of my students do not have the resources to support buying extras. Our school does not have the money to buy classroom library books either. We work hard to make sure that our students get the same experience as those students at more affluent schools. We work hard to level the playing field for these wonderful kids. I try to build their love of reading by providing fun and engaging lessons for them, as well as providing a wide variety of good reading material for them to access at anytime.

My Project

Thanks to Donors Choose and my own money I built a fabulous library last year that kept the students engaged and enjoying reading. I even had students who weren't in my classes coming by to check out a book. As the year went on I knew I was going to need even more books. That is where you come in. My goal this year is to continue to foster a love for reading within my students. The novels you are providing will help do that. Children often turn away from reading and see it as just another job when they are never allowed to select their own reading material. This year my 7th graders will be reading 20 different books outside of our main curriculum. These novels will be self selected from the books provided by you! They will be able to select books like; The Mighty Miss Malone, A Walk to Remember, Freak the Mighty, and Rumble Fish.

The books you provide will give my students the ability to access reading material of their own choosing at anytime.

The books will provide endless hours of entertainment and joy for my students. My students will be able to build their literacy, their vocabulary, and their grammar skills all while building their love for reading. The best way to improve reading skills is to read more. My students will read an extra 20 novels this year, some will read even more.
