New Year, New Atlases!

Help me give my students new atlases to replace our older, damaged ones so that we can continue the geographic literacy activities they highlighted as "a favorite-definitely teach again!" in my end-of-year course review.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I use atlases multiple times a week in my ENL classes. They're popular with students, because in my heterogeneous classes, everyone has an entry point into the texts and everyone understands the need to know how to map.

For me, atlases are the ideal material for the alternative diagnostics I do to understand students' language processing.

Students' engagement with atlases help me understand how they make sense of visually complex texts in a way students never experience as infantilizing. We also use them to do community building as part of literacy, as my ENL learners all come from different countries and want to share about their countries with each other and learn about each other's countries. There's an authentic reason to engage with the text and with each other.

Unfortunately, as I unpacked my set of Ultimate Globetrotting Atlases to get ready for this year, the books looked as well-used as they have been, as they've been part of my curriculum since I purchased them in 2018. Unlike other materials, I was unable to purchase these through my school because the Ultimate Globetrotting Atlas, unlike other kids and student styles, has narratives about what to do while visiting countries and so is less dry and academic. Please help me get the atlases I can't purchase through other means so that the students can start fresh with new books that communicate my commitment to helping them do their best with the best possible materials.
