My Students

Welcome to Zucker Lightning Exceptional Children! This class serves students with a variety of moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in the self-contained setting. We focus on all core areas of academics within our class with an emphasis on functionality and job skills. Our students are full of energy and creativity.

We celebrate our students' abilities and uniqueness.

As a teacher at a low income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges at home and at school. Despite the many challenges my students face at home, they enjoy being at school in order to experience new things while learning.

My Project

With a new school year starting, teachers work hard to make their classrooms welcoming for their students. A welcoming environment helps students become acclimated and comfortable which is crucial for learning!

Some things in the classroom need to be freshened up and others simply need to be replaced.

My students enjoy working towards something, be it a brain break activity or something tangible. Each student in my classroom has a wallet that holds onto their dollars they earn throughout the day. Students earn dollars for completing work or following expectations. Students can spend their money at our classroom store which is full of fun activities and tangible rewards such as stickers or small toys. It also teaches them the concept of saving and spending money!

The play money will replace the money we have been using for a couple years. The toy assortment will restock some store items that students purchase. The water beads, play-doh, magic wands, putty, and squeeze balls will replace old brain break and sensory items.

My students learn best when activities are fun and energizing. The POP games are a great fun way to practice reading, math, and social skills. My students also learn best when using tangible items which means they go through a lot of wear and tear. I laminate most materials in order for them to last throughout the year so we go through a lot of laminating sheets and velcro. These items will help in the long run as we laminate materials all year long!

Please help me provide fresh new materials for my students at the start of the school year, it will help make our classroom environment all the more welcoming!
