My Students

"Where we start is not where we will finish," is the perfect statement to describe my students. They are often thought of as trouble-makers; however, my students are bright and want to learn. We work hard to dispel that stereotype.

The students in my class are economically challenged.

Despite this set back, I have seen some students come in below grade-level and leave scholars. However, it took a lot of work on their part. My school is in an inner city neighborhood and there are many who believe the only way out is through sports but I say NO.

My Project

As the new school year begins and students usher into the classroom bright eyed and rested from the summer, there is a slight dimming in some of their eyes. This stress is caused by the knowledge of how much lack there is at home and them not wanting anyone to know.

Our uniform is supposed to be the great equalizer.

However, there are students who have designer polo shirts and pants. There is a battle over having just the right shoes. I am asking for shirts for those students who are happy to have a clean shirt to wear. I have had a hard time with those students who cannot afford more than one or two shirts; and therefore, they have to wear unwashed shirts for days because they have not had time to go to a Laundromat.

I am also asking for healthy and quick break and lunch options for those students who get hungry throughout the day and are not approved for free and reduced lunch. It is essential to make sure that students are not sitting in class with aching bellies because they have not eaten all day.
