Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This unit on contact forces begins as students consider situations where they have seen their phones break. They contrast these situations with others where something else collided with another object and either did break or, surprisingly, did not. Attempting to identify the factors that contribute to damage occurring in some collisions and not others, as well as trying to explain what is happening during the crash that causes one type of result versus another, sparks a series of questions and ideas for investigations around the question why do things sometimes get damaged when they hit each other?

All the materials on the request list will be used for the testing on the unit.

For example, we will use different objects on the list to test the collision and the damage that will cause in different situations.

For instance, we can use the tripod fan to create the wind to force the objects to move toward each other to create a collision. We can use the clay to create different collision objects for our investigations.

Various food items such as noodles, crackers, and hard candies will be used to determine what easily accessible materials reduce peak force in a collision. We will compare the structure of the materials and find similarities in their compositions that might affect their function. This drives the work for the first two parts of the unit. In the first part of the unit, students make general observations about what happens to objects during collisions and quickly move to analyze data that show that objects deform when forces are applied.

According to this unit project of investigating the collision, students need a variety of objects to learn and engineer the project.
