My Students

My robotics team is an eclectic collection of students from AP and IB students to students with special needs. We are one of the oldest teams in South Carolina. In recent years, my team has increased from 17 to 50 students. The students not only attend my school, but a few are home schooled. With this degree of diversity, you could almost suspect the team to be fragmented. However, the team is very much like a family, with everyone supporting one another.

The team does more than build robots.

They learn the soft-skills that are important in college and future careers. They learn how to work together, communicate their ideas in ways that others can understand, and they learn to listen to others. During competitions, they recognize that they need to cooperate with other teams to build a winning alliance.

My Project

We are always needing tools. Even the most careful mechanic has tools that become tired and worn-out. Robotics students truly put tools to their test. The tools are used and abused in ways that amaze the most seasoned mentor. It’s as if the students are saying, “Look what I can do.” Then begin hammering on a screw with an adjustable wrench…Okay, it truly isn’t that terrible, but students can be very rough on tools. Some tools are used repeatedly and become worn very quickly.

Before tools become a safety hazard, we will remove them and replace them.

When we are at competition, other teams will borrow tools. Usually, they are returned in the same condition they are lent. Upon occasion, the other robotics teams forget to return the tools. Outside of the cost of robot parts, replacing worn-out and lost tools is the majority of our building budget.
