My Students

I have 10 students with various learning difficulties in grades 6-8. They face many challenges at school on a daily basis. However, they are very curious and want to learn all the necessary skills to function well in the real world.

Some of my students are still in the process of learning how to take care of themselves: how to tie their shoelaces and use proper hygiene skills; while others are in the process of learning money and basic reading skills.

All of them love technology and would respond better to my teaching, if I could present the same concept in many different ways. My students are very curious and inquisitive: they need to know how the real world works. They try very hard every day to be successful and take pride in their accomplishments.

My Project

My students need some basic classroom resources to keep their interests going: we need a globe, some sets of teaching clocks and calculators. Having sets of things will speed up my teaching: instead of taking turns we can do some things together as a whole group. We use an overhead projector on a daily basis, but we do not have a wall screen. It takes time to erase the board, and later to have all that information written on the board again. With the budget cuts it is next to impossible to find the money to have all necessary materials. My class is unique, so we need special things that most of the special day programs on my campus do not need. My students will appreciate all the things we can get from our donors. It would make them feel like their interests and needs are important.

I think that despite the fact that my students learn basic skills very slowly, they deserve real things and manipulatives so they could learn how to read the clock and the schedule, how to shop for basic foods and not to overspend their budgets.

Their lives are not easy, so we are looking forward to get all those necessary teaching materials, so that all of my students feel successful.
