My Students

At our unscreened public high school in Downtown Brooklyn, many of our amazing students come from under-served communities around the borough and will be the first in their family to attend college.

Our students are extremely engaged in learning, and though on average enter our school below grade level in reading, almost 100% are accepted to college by the time they graduate.

They are extremely dedicated learners and come to school every day excited to learn, especially history. In class, technology has helped bridge the gaps in reading that students come in with, and given access to others who need a different way of accessing information.

My Project

Right now in the era of remote learning, my school's technology in the building is incredibly light as we have sent out all of our Chromebooks to students for use at home. Still, in NYC many of our students will be headed back into the classroom for hybrid learning and we are in need of technology for when they arrive.

Though we can ask students to bring their laptops/Chromebooks back and forth, the wear and tear on those items, as well as a student's inability to charge it throughout the day means that we are limited in how we use technology in the classroom.

With your help, I can get some Chromebooks into the hands of students who may have forgotten their technology at home, or whose laptop or Chromebook died during a lesson so that we can continue moving forward uninterrupted!

There are endless resources out there to help students learn through the use of Chromebooks, and at the same time help provide students an education on the technology itself. There are websites that make assessments fun (Kahoot!), that make testing the temperature of the room a little less intimidating to shyer students (GoFormative), and ways to provide PowerPoint slides in an interactive way (Pear Deck).

In the age of Covid, when we are trying to limit the use of materials as much as possible, and most of our students' work is already online, having the ability to use Chromebooks in the classroom is imperative.
