New Teacher in Inner City - A Printer is Essential!
Help me give my students a printer so I can maximize instructional efficiency! After 20-years working in various educational capacities, I hope to make an impact teaching inner city youth. Starting from scratch is tough, so THANK YOU!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Hello! I am a new teacher starting from scratch. I will be working with 9th grade SLIFE (students with limited or interrupted formal education) in the inner city of New Jersey. Having just completed my teaching credential, I was proactive in seeking this teaching opportunity. I left my job at an elite boarding school (admissions) because I seek to make a greater impact on youth...I will be teaching 75 students. In preparing for the school year, I was given a small budget for supplies: pencils, pens, an electric pencil sharpener, composition notebooks, loose leaf paper, and dry erase markers. This was as far as my allotted budget could stretch. This is why my priority/#1 request through DonorsChoose is for a reliable printer. From my experience as a student-teacher at two schools in the same District in which I will be working, there is rarely a working printer/copier to say nothing of a sufficient printer paper and toner supply. In teaching SLIFE students, I know I will be teaching many important skills from interpersonal communication, literacy, mathematics, technology...and it will be essential to differentiate instruction using various modes (not just using school issued chrome books / google classroom). Of course, I will need to print out traditional worksheets as I will be drilling important, basic math and language skills (coupled with handling manipulatives, of course!). Further, as I teach literacy my students will need to see/handle words and images in print (I am not a fan of reading exclusively electronically, nor does this work for developing readers and those with limited formal education). They need the chance to mark up a passage with questions, circling words they do not know (critical reading skills I will foster!). I also need a printer to produce and showcase my students' original work.
