Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a science teacher in a Title 1 school and the students come to the lab to do hands on activities in science. Lizzie our bearded dragon helps the students observe the food chain in action and camouflage. Over 1500 students in our school come to our lab throughout the year.

My students are low income.

Many do not get to go to the zoo or other places to have hands on experiences. My goal is to give kids a hands on and visual experience to science. They love coming to my room to visit Lizzie and watch her. Our school has 1700 students and there is never enough materials and money to do the extra things like have classroom pets.

My Project

We use Lizzie to teach about the food chain and what living things need to survive. My students to get to watch Lizzie eat crickets, worms and lettuce among other things. Since Lizzie is an omnivore we also talk about different foods animals eat an how scientists classify animals this way. The students learn how to care for living things and appreciate the time effort and it takes. I am requesting a bigger tank, heat lamp and substrate. Lizzie does not have enough room in her current tank. This makes it hard to observe her in action. Everything is very cramped so the students observations are not accurate. A bigger tank would allow Lizzie more room to move and hunt crickets and the students can observe a food chain in action.

My students would not get this experience at home.

I do not have the personal finances to buy this myself for Lizzie. I feel so fortunate that Lizzie was donated to my classroom. Lizzie has become a welcome addition to our science room The kids love to visit her and always stop by to say hello to her. She has kindled a love for science in our young students.
