My Students

I teach in a Title I public middle school in Brooklyn. My students come from many different countries, including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, China, the United States, Yemen, Chile, Pakistan, and Ecuador. Together, we study Social Studies and learn about the values, customs and beliefs that have shaped America's history. As you can imagine, my students' experiences truly enrich the learning inside our classroom.

My students love listening to stories about Revolutionary War spies and the reactions of the native Taino people when they first encountered Christopher Columbus.

This storytelling pulls them in and gets them interested and invested to do the hard work that I ask of them. My students are expected to read critically, analyze multiple historical perspectives, and reflect all that they have learned in their writing. It is challenging work, but every year my students continue to impress me by asking thoughtful questions and placing themselves in the shoes of those who have come before them.

My Project

At the end of every school year, I give my students a survey about how they feel the class went for them and I ask for feedback. Every year a significant number of my students let me know that they really liked how my class helped them with their organizational skills. I do a Donors Choose project every year in order to help my students build these skills.

This project will level the playing field for my students.

Most of my students and their families have a difficult time making ends meet, and this project goes such a long way to reduce the financial stress many families suffer when school starts up in the Fall. This project will allow each student to have the same exact supplies for my class. No one will feel singled out or start the year behind because they cannot afford basic supplies.

This year, I will be teaching American History to 150 7th graders. I can't wait to see them fill their notebooks and folders with their writing about the American Revolution, Native Americans and colonial life. As a history teacher, it's my job to not just teach about the past, but also the present. The Junior Scholastic subscription will be a great resource for my students as we stay up to date with the news.
