My Students

Hormones. Puberty. Social cliques. Rebellion. When I tell people that I teach 7th grade or Special Education, I always get their blessing because they remember when they were in 7th grade, or remember when their children were in middle school. Every year, every day is a new adventure.

Over the last three years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a co-teacher who turned out to be my best friend.

Unfortunately for me, she is going back to graduate school to study social work and continue to help impoverished students, just in a different capacity. As I embark to enter the 2015-2016 school year alone for the first time since 2012, it is bittersweet to know even though she's pursuing what she wants, I won't have my partner by my side in the classroom making a difference. This year, I will be teaching American History to over 120 7th grade students. Most of them have special needs while others are English Language Learners. My students come from many different countries around the world while at the same time, having a difficult time focusing in class and understanding the English language. My students also come from different impoverished, dangerous neighborhoods in Brooklyn. It is an extremely difficult task but I love taking on the challenge every year.

My Project

I am very excited to get this project funded because my students and I will be able to use all these supplies throughout the year. My students have a tough time staying organized and with the folders and composition notebooks being funded, I will be able to provide them with 4 folders for each Marking Period. The composition notebooks will be put to good use for their classwork and homework that will be given every night. I am also requesting a subscription to Junior Scholastic magazine. As a history teacher, it is important for my students to be made aware of current events and this magazine will help both myself and my students. It contains engaging articles for them and I will be able to create lesson plans from it. Most of my students and their families struggle to make ends meet and once this project is funded, they will not need to go out and buy any supplies for my class. Everything will be given to them through this project (highlighters, paper, white out, erasers, sharpies).

The donations made to my project will help level the playing field for my students.

They're already playing catch up because they immigrated here and haven't grasped the English language, their parents make very little money or they struggle to stay focused in class. With this project, my students will have all the basic supplies that EVERY student deserves. Everything will be new, no more hand me downs or old notebooks and folders from the year before. New supplies for a new year! Thank You!
