This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is undergoing a change from a junior high to a 9th grade only freshman academy. Students will be taking either Art I or Art Appreciation for their one fine art credit. Many of my students who are in Art I will be going onto Art 2,3,4 and AP art and is vital that they not only learn the basic concepts like principles and elements, how to break things into shapes for drawing, etc. - but also that they learn the basics of using different media so that they are ready to excel in art as well as become appreciators of the arts now and in the future.
Having drying and storage racks, collage trays, paint and other quality supplies helps students succeed in art.
Having markers that don't work and pencils that break if you look at them funny is frustrating and impedes their ability to absorb content related information. For many students, art is not only their time to shine, but a class where they can push their creativity and critical thinking skills which will be imperative in our creative economy.
This funding will allow them to have basic supplies like pencils, markers, ink, paint and pastels as well as the containers to keep these things organized and help them learn the proper care of art supplies.
