My Project

In addition to restocking classroom supplies, I want to begin the new school year with new books for my classroom library. As a 6th grade ELA teacher, I spent the last school year encouraging an appreciation for reading among my students. Many students really flourished when they were able to choose books from the classroom to borrow and figure out what genres or series they enjoyed. During the year, many students had asked me if I had more specific books they were interested in, but unfortunately I did not. I want to utilize this opportunity that Donors Choose is creating to stock my bookshelves with books that are popular/in high demand among my students as well as more books they can see themselves in, being in an urban school.

Not only is reading proven to strengthen reading skills, but it also provides students with the ability to build community and travel anywhere, real or fiction.

In creating a classroom space with current popular books and alternative seating to enjoy reading (which is the purpose of the rug), I want to continue helping spark a joy in reading books with my new students in the upcoming school year.
