My Students

The vision for a Community Based Instruction class is to provide our children with moderate to severe disabilities the skills and knowledge needed to meaningfully participate and live in their environments. It's difficult to teach those skills when resources are so limited.

Our school is a brand new school located in a low income neighborhood.

I teach a moderate/severe special education class with focus on community based instruction for high school students. The students in my class are socially and economically disadvantaged boys with moderate to severe disabilities ranging from autism to severe mental retardation. Although the odds are against them, these boys are eager to learn and become independent individuals. They enjoy dancing and singing, and they love cooking.

My Project

Our classroom is designed like a regular general education classroom and is not equipped to support the teaching of functional, real world life skills such as cooking. Since our school is newly established, we have to start from scratch and we are limited in resources and funding. The money we received was not enough to cover for all needed educational materials let alone cooking appliances. By having cooking appliances (like a portable oven and a portable burner), we are able to teach the many academic and life skills embedded in cooking, such as personal hygiene, food preparation, measurements, science, chemistry, reading and nutrition, which are essential to helping our students become independent.
