My Students

Some of my students only get to experience fascinating parts of the globe through books. They get to see mind-boggling scientific phenomena through the glossy pages of great non-fiction. While the illustrations are key, they need to be able to read the books that excite them.

My students typically come from one of the highest poverty areas in Nashville.

After teaching for several years in a few different schools, I am constantly humbled how open my families have been in sharing their personal hardships. Even early on in the year, I have seen students come to school with tremendous personal struggles and still come to school ready to do their best. Because in my classroom, we are constantly working towards becoming the best scholars we can be and preparing ourselves "to college... and beyond!"

My Project

One of the constant questions I tackle is when talking with parents is how to increase our kiddos access to the books they need. I can tell from their reading logs that most of them are reading only fiction books at home. That means, I need to compensate with even more non-fiction texts as best practice aims for a 50-50 balance of genres. My library is disproportionately made up of fiction books and many of the non-fiction books I have were donated (thank you!) in the past when I taught 4th grade. Due to district changes, our science, social studies, and writing times have been reduced this year. To compensate, I am trying to have the students engage with non-fiction during their independent reading and writing stations. To do this, we need to have a collection of non-fiction readers that they can independently read. It is very difficult to find low level non-fiction readers at the public library, so I am trying to build up my classroom library to fit their needs.

My students will be more engaged during independent work time with non fiction texts at their level.

They will feel a sense of success that has been a barrier in the past to enjoying non-fiction.
