This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a school social worker, I work with all children in my school building. Many of our students come from homes in impoverished communities, and they experience several barriers that can prevent them from arriving to school on a regular basis.
Many of our students carry the weight of their homelives on their shoulders while trying to stay engaged in learning each and every day.
Our school is doing our best to provide love and support to foster academic growth and achievement!
My Project
Many of the students who attend our school arrive each day without their basic needs being met. I can recall a countless number of incidents where students arrive without wearing underwear or socks, pants with holes in inappropriate areas, and outfits that don't follow our school's guidelines. In addition, several children have accidents during the day, thus soiling their school-day outfits.
Instead of sitting uncomfortably during the entire school day, which most likely is impacting their concentration, my students need adequate supplies like pants, shirts, undergarments, and socks to feel successful!
If children do not have their basic needs met, it is difficult for them to feel confident and eager to learn!
Many of my homeless students face a plethora of barriers that prevent them from coming to school including lack of clothes! Some parents don’t want to send their kids because they aren’t prepared- both with clothes and supplies. Per our Homeless Education Program (HEP) for MPS, all homeless students must receive one free uniform per the school's budget. Unfortunately, sometimes that is all they have so they wear the same outfit every day, and the school doesn't have enough funds to provide them with more. My homeless kids have enough on their plate and not having adequate supplies for school shouldn’t be one.
