Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reaching kids that are the "unteachable" or those that are labeled "low" or as being not "college track" is difficult, but not impossible. Literacy instruction is best delivered when these students can see themselves in the books that they are reading.

I teach three sections of inclusion ELA with students who are from high poverty backgrounds.

Outside of learning disabilities, these students struggle with broken families, drug abuse, addiction, violence and so much more. I have two students who are in foster care this year alone. They struggle academically, but once I reach them, they begin to take a renewed interest in themselves and their education.

My Project

I am requesting two new whole class novel sets for my classroom. These memoirs will allow students to see themselves in the literature and begin to spark discussion as well as give them examples of people, similar to them, that made it. By giving students examples of success, I will give them hope. Once they have hope, they will be able to do great things.

These class sets will help to facilitate class discussion and to get students thinking about their own futures while working on building their own literacy.

By giving students hope, it changes their lives because it gets them thinking about how they can be better.
