This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher at P.C. Academy, I have the privilege to guide and teach students with a wide variety of knowledge, life experiences, and unique personalities that cannot be replicated. My students come from a wide variety of socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, with the majority of them residing in the west side of Chicago. The students rely on school owned instruments and resources, as 95% of my students do not own an instrument or have access to outside programs for music.

Despite the circumstances, these facts do not stop these young minds from putting forth their best efforts into the newly developing music program.

My students have committed themselves to musical excellence, developing their musicianship and pushing themselves to sharpen their musical talents and abilities. It is my goal to give these students the necessary tools to help then succeed not only at the high school level, but potentially prepare them for the collegiate music level. Above all else, I would love to provide my students with the best experience that I have to offer here. And with your contribution, you will give our music program the necessary instruments, and equipment to help our program grow!

My Project

Our Modern Band High School Program is a completely new music program in its second year in development. We have decided to build this program from the ground up because our school does not have any elementary or middle schools nearby that have steady music programs to teach students band instruments to prepare them for the high school level. Once they have reached the high school level and have not had any prior resources, the musical experience diminishes along with student participation.

In the last two years, we have seen 50% more interest and participation in our Modern Band Program in comparison to our beginner's program in the last decade.

This program sparks a huge interest in these students because we incorporate music that they are not only listening to, but are directly and personally influenced by. The music of Jazz, Pop, R&B, Latin, Rock, Hip-Hop, and Blues are imbedded in these students, and it is our duty to provide them with the tools necessary to make the music that they love. And as a music teacher and a professional performing musician, I can directly relate to them!

As exciting as this is, the main step we need to take is to provide our students with working instruments to meet their musical needs. It is my hope that we will be able to provide enough instruments for every student to use without the overcrowding need to share an instrument with multiple students in one class. I am requesting Basses, Drum Sets, and Guitars for the students to use and utilize.
