Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

1st grade isn't what it used to be. We all have fond memories of first grade, learning to read and count.... But nowadays the standards are going up and up and up! Students have to work with simple fractions, read a clock, count to 130, complete inequalities, and find missing subtrahends!

I work in one of Boston's original Turnaround schools.

This means that 3 years ago the school was "underperforming," and the staff was changed entirely. As a new staff, we have been charged with the task of "bringing up scores", and providing the absolute best education possible to our students. Our school is predominantly ESL students and 94% below the poverty line. My students are amazing. They are working so hard and learning quickly, but these new math standards have been a challenge. The expectations have increased so much that not all students can keep up. Quite literally we are teaching 2nd grade math units in first grade.

My Project

My hope is that with these additional resources, I can bring these challenging new math objectives to life for the students. Currently I experiment with making all of my own materials, but the trial and error process, and doesn't guarantee that I will create the most effective tool. Most specifically, the students need materials to help them learn to read a clock, to learn fractions of 1/2 and 1/4, to measure in inches, to count past 100, to use a number line to show their work, and to solve various types of story problems. With these resources, students will get hands on practice with the math standards, and I can push everyone to succeed.

As I said earlier, the standards for our students keep going up.

Statistically speaking, I teach where students are at high risk of dropping out before they even reach high school. These new, higher, standards are only going to exacerbate this danger. My goal is to bring math alive, and empower the students to feel capable, rather than afraid or intimidated by these standards. Maybe this can make a difference in their educational future.
