New Library Needed!

My students need a new classroom library from which to choose silent reading and nonfiction titles for content learning. My old library is dwindling, torn, and tattered. They also need book bins and two storage carts to store the books in.

My Students

My students enjoy a dynamic classroom. They are up and about in learning centers and doing independent projects often. One peaceful area of my room that they enjoy is our classroom library with a comfortable rug and seating. They will really enjoy a library full of new books and organized shelving.

I teach a wonderful group of first graders at a school in Southern California where 40% of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and 100% of the students receive free breakfast daily.

Our school loves to integrate the arts and technology into our academics because we know that many students get inspired and thrive in an atmosphere where they can explore and have fun too. We are a school full of many cultures, and many students speak another language other than English at home.

My Project

There are often times during the school day where students have options for their learning. Sometimes they are being lectured at by me, but at other times they are around the room at our computer center, a writing center, a teacher-directed small group center, or at one of their favorites . . . the classroom library. Students go there alone or in pairs to simply choose titles that interest them and read or practice reading. They love going there, but are often disappointed by the old and tired selections that have been there all year. Though we take good care of our library, mine is over a decade old and the bindings are wearing thin. A new and refreshed library will entertain hundreds of students for hopefully another two decades at least! Also, the organization afforded to me by the book bins and racks will allow us to take even better, more organized care of our wonderful library center.

Students need to learn to read, but they also need to learn to enjoy reading.

With the allure of handheld technology devices and screens these days, reading needs to be more attractive than ever - and it's pretty attractive in my classroom. Your contribution will make it an even more appealing and attractive place for them to go and enjoy the wonderful world of reading. I do my best to foster a love of reading, and your donation will help me in my quest.
