This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a school library in Skid Row where the organization believes in the children, youth, and families we serve. Our model fosters pathways to success through excellence in education, powerful families, and strong communities for children and youth to thrive. 95 percent of our students come from low income families and many of them lack resources at home and their communities.

Our school organization believes on a foundation of strong children, families and communities.

Because of that mission, I make sure the library becomes a safe and fun place for these children, a place where students and their families feel welcomed and encouraged to grow and learn. Our students are not only excited to learn but also understand why it's important to show their heart and love for learning and books! My students now than ever need access to books and resources that will support their learning.

It's a joy to see these children feel that the library is a safe haven to them. Their excitement and smile as they grab a new book or use technology is undescribable. My heart grows three sizes every day when they say library time is their favorite time.

My Project

I want to help provide a culture of literacy at home and foster a love for reading. Many students do not have access to transportation to go to a public library so the school library is the only place they can check out books to read at home. Most of these students are reading in low levels and often don't even want to choose books because they don't think reading is for them.

These books have been chosen specifically to attract their attention and to cultivate a love for reading.

My students will learn that reading is indeed fun, and that they are all kinds of books. Books are truly limitless and expands our minds, imagination and worlds.
