Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Technology lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential." My four year old students are full of potential, on the threshold of a world of knowledge. I want a new laptop to make their entrance to this world of knowledge exciting.

My students are four years old.

Almost all of them live in poverty in the Bronx. The children are kind, willing to forgive, try new things and are eager to learn. When they come to school for the first time, they enter my Pre-K classroom. The children and their families trust me to create a little nest filled with learning, love, and nurture. So in return, I strive to come through for them every moment, every day.

My Project

In my classroom, we have a Smart Board, a 60 inch whiteboard that allows everything displayed on my lap top to be seen by ALL of my students AND it responds to my touch or my students' touch. For instance, if I am teaching the children about family, I can have them view a 3 minute video about a family in Cairo or India on Sesamestreet. If I want to introduce the children to letters and practice their phonemic awareness and math skills using interactive software, they can each come up to the Smart Board at circle time and practice. The laptop and Smart Board make a great team in the classroom because they provide an engaging learning experience for the children.

Currently, the laptop that is used solely to connect with the Smart Board in the room is about 10 years old.

It needs to be replaced with a laptop that loads quickly so that learning can take place on command and play videos that do not stutter or pause so that learning is engaging instead of frustrating. A newer computer will make the most of the children's time and give them opportunities to connect with the world, develop phonemic awareness and math skills.
