My Project

The New Kid by Jerry Craft will be an invaluable addition to my classroom as it provides a relatable, engaging, and thought-provoking story for my 6th grade students. The novel explores themes such as fitting in, identity, and the challenges of navigating new environments, all of which are highly relevant to my students, who are at an age where they are starting to face similar social and personal challenges. Through the experiences of Jordan, the protagonist, students will gain insight into issues of race, inclusion, and empathy, fostering important conversations that will help them develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others. The graphic novel format, which combines illustrations with text, will also support visual learners and engage reluctant readers, making the book more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

The goal of this project is to provide my students with a resource that promotes both personal growth and academic development.

By incorporating The New Kid into our curriculum, I hope to encourage discussions around key topics such as friendship, resilience, and diversity, while also helping students improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills.

Many of my students come from different cultural, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds, which makes it essential to expose them to stories that reflect their own experiences as well as those of others. By engaging with "The New Kid", they will have the chance to see themselves in the story and gain new perspectives, helping to build a classroom environment that values inclusion, respect, and open-mindedness. This project will not only enrich their reading skills but also encourage them to reflect on their own identities and develop empathy for others.
