My Project
I am over the moon about my new job teaching eighth grade Social Studies and English Language Arts in my own community of Brisbane, where I have lived for over twenty years.
"Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two” is a winner of the Booklist Top-10 Historical Fiction for Youth award.
The protagonist, Ned, is sent to a school that bans his Navajo language, but it is this language that eventually gives him the ability to become a top-secret Navajo Code Talker during World War Two.
We will read this novel while studying the contributions of indigenous peoples in the United States, while making connections to our overall theme of resilience.
