Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My plan is to reinvent this unit. Many of my students are EL and RSP and require not just cognitive but visual stimulation. What better way to reach them than through a graphic novel version of the Holocaust retold? This will allow the students to connect by striking my visual learners.
My students come from a low-income (free lunch), high-crime area in which many cannot even afford the basic materials and supplies needed.
I would like my classroom to be an escape from that by providing the tools necessary to overcome the difficulties of life and it starts with knowledge. I want my students to become more engaged by connecting to literature and succeeding academically. I am hoping to help by making the literature in my curriculum as relatable to them as possible.
My Project
The resources I would love to use for my new unit are "Maus" and Night.
My students do not have a class set of the novel Night by Elie Wiesel. This is the novel I will use to introduce the pain and horror that Wiesel and his family faced in Nazi-occupied Poland and beyond.
The second part of my unit would introduce the graphic novel "Maus", which retells the horrifying story of survival during the Holocaust through the representation of animals. This epic graphic novel series is one of the most critically acclaimed available for students. I believe it will allow them to relate on a personal level through a popular form of literature that is visually stimulating for my students that struggle with understanding text.
My hope is to engage the visual learners and help them develop an appreciation for literature.
Students will be able to not only connect through the humanizing lens by first reading Night, but also connect with "Maus" by striking those visual learners that may otherwise have difficulty understanding this significant event in history.
