This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My recent immigrant students come from over 50 countries and speak over 30 languages. They are not the children of United Nations employees but of car service drivers, construction workers, and bodega owners. They are all studying the history of their NEW country for the first time and love it.

Our school has 380 students who are all recent immigrants, come from over 52 countries, and speak over 30 languages.

They truly work as hard as they possibly can, are hungry for knowledge, and strive to improve their English/history each day. They come from so many different countries and are supportive and empathetic of each student regardless of where they come from -- in their eyes, they are all in the same position and need to help and support each other to find success. They love United States history and learning about the different groups that struggled for equality in our country and about the countless individuals that helped shape the country to what it is today.

My Project

In my history class I use a video games series called Mission US that has been created to help diverse learners delve into the history and assume the role of young people from different time periods and learn about their life and experiences. It allows the kids to empathize with these people of history and understand the time period in an interactive fashion, rather than in a traditional manner using textbooks and other reading materials -- my students don't all read too well in English but they all can participate in these games and take different ideas and experiences away from each one they play. I'm seeking a class set of high quality, noise reducing headphones to maximize the video game experience for all students - using these headphones will make a major difference in my class as the students learn history in a non-traditional way. So many students have the new iPhones that has a new headphone port/or bluetooth headphones so when I ask them to plug into our laptops they rarely have the correct headphones at the moment.

I'm also looking to get a waterproof storage box for when I travel from classroom to classroom, to hold their cellphones (which I collect as collateral for the headphones -- they love this since they are addicted to their phones and to take it out of their possession makes them feel liberated), and to store the expensive headphones overnight.
