Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The "science" of race is long and littered with pseudoscience, misunderstanding, racism, hatred, and genocide. It is a reality my students, all black and brown immigrants, live with to this day. I want to empower my students to tackle the myth of race science by teaching them the genetics of traits like melanin, and our shared ancestry through their own DNA.

The headphones I am requesting are for students' upcoming interdisciplinary project about race.

In partnership with the English Language Arts teacher, students will examine race and racism in America. Students will use headphones for their podcast project where they discuss what they learn about the history and science of race and racism.

Through this project we hope students can also help teach others about these important topics and have deep and challenging conversations about their experiences and ways to get involved with social change. We hope students come away feeling empowered to use their voice for their communities and be active agents in creating change.
