Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are English Language Learners who have recently immigrated to the United States from countries such as Yemen, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Bangladesh, Ecuador, Mexico, and Honduras. Many of my students have experienced significant gaps in their education; as a result, they have acute literacy needs in both their home languages and in English.

Although I teach tenth grade English Language Arts classes, very few of my students are able to read at grade level.

They need a great deal of encouragement to read for school, as well as to read independently.

My Project

Studies show that independent reading "has consistently been found to relate to growth in vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency, and general information" ("Independent Reading and School Achievement" (2000)). Having these graphic novels in my classroom library will definitely pique my students' interest in reading.

By increasing their literacy skills through independent reading, I know that my students will be able to boost their academic achievement.

My students adore graphic novels: as English Language Learners, they appreciate the way in which the images support their reading comprehension. Moreover, the texts listed below are works that my previous students have enjoyed reading.
