My Students
My first-grade students are good kids who come from difficult circumstances. Working families, learning English as a second language and having no one at home who can help them with their school work are a few of their daily challenges.
A large number of students at our school, 89% to be exact, receive free or reduced-price lunches.
Although we have high levels of poverty, you would not know it from walking on campus and meeting the children. Despite their challenges in life, our students continue to achieve academically every year. In fact, we were honored as a State Distinguished School. My goal, as their teacher, is to help my students reach their full potential, despite their hardships.
My Project
My students love to play games to practice their math and reading skills. But after a while, the games get a little dingy and dirty from all the hands manipulating them. During Covid, I would like to keep things as clean and sanitary as possible.
These new games will address mental health while helping keep our classroom environment clean and healthy.
Students get so excited when new items are delivered to the classroom. Everyone wants to play them. I am happy because they are practicing their skills and learning to share and work together.
