Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher of 1st grade students with special needs in a low-income/high poverty school in New York City, my students are faced with many challenges and difficulties both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, my classroom is a safe and inviting place for students to discover, learn, and have fun!

My students walk into school each day eager to learn and engage in meaningful social and academic experiences.

They love to dance, sing, read, make art, solve problems, and help people. They are scientists, mathematicians, authors, and artists! Though each of my students has been diagnosed with a disability, whether Autism Spectrum Disorder, Intellectual Disability, or Traumatic Brain Injury, my young learners always rise to the high expectations set in my classroom. My goal as their teacher has been to inspire them to love learning, and they inspire my teaching each and every day.

My Project

My classroom is my students' home away from home, and our home is in desperate need of new furniture. The furniture in our classroom is very old and falling apart. With the new shelves I am requesting, I will create two engaging centers for our classroom. We will create a Math and Literacy Center. One of the shelves will be used to store our math journals, supplies and games. This will be the Math Center that students will be able to access throughout the day. Above the shelf will be student work and essential math anchor charts. The second shelf will be used for our Literacy Center and will store our writing notebooks, literacy supplies, and literacy games. When students finish their work early, students will be able to access these materials and independently learn at the Literacy Center. With your help, we can build a Math and Literacy Center for my incredible students!
