My Students

My forensic science students love to explore and discover the nature of crime and justice in new and interesting ways. This class is extremely rewarding and enjoyable because the students are truly engaged in a unique and interesting field of science. We examine topics such as fingerprints, DNA evidence, counterfeiting, forgery, forensic anthropology, blood splatter, serial killers, and crime scene investigations to name a few.

We study how throughout human history conflict, psychosis, greed, and racism have created systems of justice.

However, my students work through problems in the classroom laboratory on a daily basis to understand how real world law enforcement, forensic scientists, and the courts function. We review current events and (Chicago) area specific forensic science and law cases. We utilize criminal case files and studies to reinforce literacy skills and improve deductive reasoning. Videos and crime based documentaries are helpful in exploring real world events. We get the most out of hands on "who done it?" type activities: fingerprint dusting, blood stain florescence, handwriting analysis, hair and fiber analysis., and mock crime scene investigations.

Many of my students go on to careers in forensics. We complete a project in the beginning of the year on forensics careers.

My Project

Pictured is our current projector which is adequate for most content areas, however, forensic science requires keen observational skills and one key tool we use is the projector. We use many forms of media, similar to what is used on police exams, to hone the students visual skills. Throughout the school year we watch crime case study documentaries, videos, and feature films in order to explore the vast history and applications of crime science. This upgrade of the projector will be an invaluable tool for our six sections of Forensic Science this year and for many years to come.

The projector I selected has multiple ports to use screen mirroring from mobile devices, streaming "sticks", and can be used by any teacher with older model PCs as well as Apple and Chromebook laptops for student presentations.

A reliable projector will greatly assist other teachers and myself with set up and the ability to plan and use technology more effectively.
