Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love to get lost in their books! The problem is, they are more excited to read our English books in the classroom than our Spanish books.

My 5th grade students are bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish!

They attend an urban school in New York City. Most students in the class are classified as English Language Learners and receive free lunch. My students love to read and look forward to independent reading every day. In our bilingual class, some days we read in English and some days we read in Spanish. The problem is that we do not have enough exciting Spanish books in our library.

My Project

In order for my students to continue growing as readers in both English and Spanish, we need more Spanish books! Specifically, we need exciting, high-interest books that will hold the students' attention. These new Spanish books will motivate my students to read in Spanish.

Research shows that being literate in your native language increases your overall literacy.

By donating to this project, you are not only helping to improve my students' Spanish reading, but their overall literacy in Spanish and English.
