My Students

"This is the most enthusiastic our daughter has ever been about reading! Thank you. We are going to order a few books this weekend." These are the words from a parent last week. Here lies the challenge in my 6th Grade Core classroom. I want books to be easily accessible for my students. I don't want them to wait for an order to arrive. I simply do not have enough "cool", engaging middle school level books for my students IN my classroom library. I need popular books that excite kids, spark empathy, and teach tolerance to my readers. These students are our future leaders. They need great books that inspire, books that make them think (perhaps a little outside the box), and books that will help shape them into amazing young adults!

My Project

I teach 6th grade in a culturally diverse community. Some families have rich libraries in their homes, and some have no books at all. My students are craving new, exciting books. Many are gifted, voracious readers who like to challenge their classmates to "partner read" and take part in "book clubs". Having a wide variety of new titles will inspire reluctant readers and spark an interest in EVERY adolescent reader in my class. 6th Core becomes a "family", and it is my goal to ensure that every child discovers the joy that reading great books can bring to one's life.
