My Students

For World Literature and Composition we try to read books from every continent and culture with an emphasis on the deeper universal meanings of narrative to human beings.

My school is a high poverty urban high school.

We have students from all over the world, many of whom are first or second generation. Most of the parents of our kids have not been to college; many have not graduated from high school. Nonetheless, we are succeeding in sending most of our students to college. This is due to inspired leadership, wrap-around services, and incredibly dedicated staff. We try not to let any children slip through the cracks. In such a diverse setting, cultural sensitivity is key, and part of this is learning about our own and others' heritages through literature.

My Project

"Under the Shadow of the Banyan" is a gorgeous fictionalized memoir of a girl's experience under the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. Its themes are perfect for World Lit, as it focuses on how memories and stories are created in times of trauma. As it happens, many our students are from Southeast Asia, and the book will have particular pertinence for them, as well as teaching their peers about an important aspect of our communal history. I read this book last summer and dreamed of teaching it. Our school has no funds for further book sets at this time, And yet I dream...

All students benefit from reading fine literature full of beautiful imagery, well-painted characters, and deep themes.

It is particularly important that students sometimes see themselves or their own histories portrayed in books in order to reify their own culture's importance.
