My Students

"Diverse" is a word that comes up most often when talking about the kids who attend my high school. We run the gamut when it comes to race, religion, and expression, but one thing that many of our students have in common is that a majority of them qualify for free and reduced lunch.

Some freshmen arrive to high school with enthusiasm and some arrive with trepidation, but all students want to feel as if they are valued and as if they belong.

Because of the funding issues in public schools, supplies such as books and technology are often battered and in short supply.

My Project

The English 9 team begins the year with Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," an engaging novel based on Alexie's own experience growing up on a reservation. In the novel, Alexie's alter-ego, Junior, is traumatized by having to use a thirty-year old Math book, demonstrating the lack of resources for Native American Youth.

Ironically, our school copies of Part-Time Indian are battered and worn, much like Junior's Math book, and we only have class sets.

This means that students are not able to bring books home to read. Because of budgeting issues, our school is not able to buy enough books so each student can have a copy, and our current copies get handled by as many as five classes a day.

I want my students to feel like they matter; I want to present them with new books which they can bring home to read. The books will stay in the English Department so that next year, students will have access to one-to-one, less battered books.
