I am a middle school ESL teacher in an urban K-8 school. In the past weeks, we have had many new ESL students arrive from war-torn countries in Central America. Despite the fact that they are in middle school, many of them have not attended any formal schooling and instead they had to go straight to the workplace to help provide food for their families. Being a teenager in the USA is difficult enough, but being a teenager who cannot speak English or read or write in any language is extremely difficult.
What can we do to help?
As I am the teacher responsible for pulling these students out and helping them learn English. As I am the first person to meet these students, I have seen how scary it is for them. They are so eager to learn and I am so honored to be the person to help teach them. In order to do this effectively, I need to have some materials that will help me teach the basics.
The materials that I am requesting (word family flipbooks, sight word sentence center, and ELD activity cards) are ones that will help the students with the basics of learning the English language, skills like sight words and phonemic patterns. With this background, they can work on creating sentences and making conversation in their new language. With access to the materials I am requesting, I will work hard to ensure the transition to the next chapter of their lives will be an enjoyable one filled with new words, friends, and opportunities.
