This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a high needs public NYC high school focused on preparing students in hospitality and tourism careers.

Our small school is comprised of around 400 students, many of whom commute long distances from their bilingual households and receive free or reduced lunch.

We have a large population of students who are classified as special education and/or ESL and work hard to support their needs.

Students often come into HSHM not having all the skills they need to be successful in high school. These students are supported through after school and Saturday tutoring and through the work of their very dedicated teachers and staff.

My Project

In our computer science classes, we do a final unit on robotics and obviously need working robots to complete this unit.

Last year we got several robots but some of them are no longer working and we need to refresh our supplies!

We also have added a new section of computer science to allow even more students access to this great field so we won't have enough for students to work in small groups unless we get more!

The specific resources we will need include 6 Edison robots, which are very simple programmable robots that are popular with introductory computer science classes, as well as batteries to make sure they can run for the entire year! It's so important that our students don't think that computer science is just sitting in front of a computer all day long. They absolutely MUST get hands-on learning of how their programming skills can come to life!
